A Forest of Sensors
Centuries old trees. Too many shades of green to count. The Andrews Forest Long-Term Ecological Research site contains some of the last remaining old growth forest in the Pacific Northwest. One summer, I visited the site to shoot photos and write a story about the research happening at the site. I had never been in growth forest before. I had no idea that you could feel a forest's ageāfrom the cool air the dense forests trap to the silence from the thick vegetation muffling sound.
I did my best to capture that feeling in photos. And, I documented the researchers trying to understand this complex ecosystem.
You can read my story, A Forest of Sensors at the link, or see the photos here.
You can read a follow up story about how the forest is dealing with the aftermath of a fire that swept through after my visit here: Burned Forest, Bleached Reef
